What We Do & Why

We are Twin Cities breast cancer survivors who race dragon boats for fun and fitness. Our purpose is to support each other and demonstrate that a full and active life is possible after diagnosis.

The dragon boat and team on Lake Gervais.

We embody the message of hope, that even though we were given a tough diagnosis, we joyously thrive. On and off the water we are “one heart, one beat, one boat.” During the Minnesota summers, we are on the water at Lake Gervais paddling and participating in dragon boat festivals. Off-season, we train on land and meet for other activities.

When we paddle, we connect to the water, to each other, and to our inner strength.  Paddling gives us a way to build our strength, physically and emotionally, and to connect with other breast cancer survivors. We are a unique group of women who, by participating in the sport of dragon boat racing, empower each member to improve her personal physical and mental fitness.

Another reason we love to paddle dragon boats is that we embrace the research that shows the importance of exercise in cancer recovery. Scientific studies show that exercise is important in preventing cancer recurrence, and dragon boating specifically is beneficial to breast cancer survivors. The Dragon Divas are proud to demonstrate the validity of these findings by promoting dragon boating for breast cancer survivors in our community.

We welcome you to join us! We are old and young, new mothers and grandmothers, married and single, any race or gender orientation. We come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. Our ages currently range from 34 to 85. Some of us are feeling out of shape from being in treatment; some are dealing with side effects or metastasis; some have never participated in a sport or thought of themselves as an athlete. Some of us have been paddling for years and strive to improve. Every person is important on the boat and honored for what they can do.

As a new member, or “newbie,” you’ll be assigned to a mentor who will help you get acquainted with the team and the sport. Before practices, our coach will be available to give you practical tips on paddling techniques and terminology.
